May 21 -- Cooking adventures at George and Water St.

Hello!

Harbourside Kitchen cooked its first post-Harbourside camp soup...and it was quite the adventure! We ended up setting up at the intersection of George and Water downtown and happily cooked a Veggie and Peanut soup (it did take about two hours longer than Megan or Erika predicted, but that's ok! At least we had utensils and bowls this time!). We'll be back at the same location next week.

Send us an email if you're interested in getting involved. Or just to say hi.

We hope to have a bigger table next time :)

The final product. Yum.

May 15th Eviction Day Cooking Adventures

May 15th was OccupyNL's eviction day from Harbourside Park. The news vultures couldn't get enough! We were that tasty. However, Harbourside Kitchen, being a nomadic unit of dissent, can't be evicted in the same way, only told to leave a certain area. Only to spring up with more onions, garlic, and ginger the next time around! Needless to say, we had a grand time on the 15th, cooking for everyone for the last time as a formal Occupy encampment. We made Aloo Matar potatoes and peas.

Not only did Erika somehow lose the plastic spoons this time, she also lost her watch at Joey's place! In the end, a local business donated some spoons so we didn't have to eat with our hands. As always, in the end we cook a delicious meal together and everyone enjoys :)

It was all gone so fast! I guess we should have more
than quadrupled the recipe...
Our cooking digs. Harbourside Kitchen loves sharing apparently.

Join us this Thursday, May 10th, at Harbourside Park for some live music and a potluck (from 4 PM-10 PM). Brat Attack and Expressive Humans will play a free Occupy NL eviction concert. We'll be cooking a vegan curried lentil dish. Email us if you want to join in the cooking festivities. Potluck starts at 4!

Love,
Harbourside Kitchen

UPDATES from the event!

After much toil in in Joey's kitchen,
we emerged with this beautiful pot of curried lentils,
which we walked down to the park to share with everyone!

Megan's yummy vegan brownies. Delicious.

Saturday cooking adventures! Don't be a Vegetable medley

Hello everyone :)

We plan on cooking a vegan garden medley stew Saturday afternoon at Harbourside Park. If you'd like to partake, we will be meeting up at the Occupy camp around 3 PM. Kyle and Erika have all the basic ingredients, but if you'd like to contribute some fresh vegetables, we would be thrilled!

Peas out,

May Day adventures

Good day!

Harbourside Kitchen has been up to food-related mischief surrounding May Day feasting and potlucking. We also distributed the first issue of our zine (to be uploaded shortly), which had delicious recipes and an article by Joey on what we are trying to accomplish in terms of food sovereignty in our community.

So, for lunch we cooked Matt's Tomato Basil soup recipe....and had the adventure of trying to hand blend it...after remembering that we had no electricity, which the city cut off at Harbourside Park about 3 months ago now. But using our downtown connections, we managed to mix it offsite, and politicize our act of walking down Water Street with a full pot of soup (by holding offensive signs reading, "Share the Feast" and other such corporate-subverting obscenities). Upon our return to the Harbourside encampment, we all had a wonderful lunch indeed.

As our supper potluck contribution, we decided to cook (quadrupling the recipe in fact) Sweet potato and peanut stew, served over a bed of rice. After Erika managed to forget all the spices she had promised to bring down and the key ingredient of cooking oil (sorry!), Harbourside Kitchen went on another impromptu adventure offsite to hunt down such things as cinnamon, cumin, fresh ginger, cayenne pepper....and in the end found some sesame oil at the Variety shop down the road. In the end, all were fed and nothing exploded. Hurray!

Witness the success despite Erika's organizational pitfalls!

And the delight emanating from the potluck feasters!
Join us this Saturday at Harbourside Park for another delicious meal. We will try to choose the recipes in advance for next week (and not so much invented on the spot or two hours beforehand) so that people can help donate the ingredients if they feel like it. Cheers!

May Day Potluck and general feasting!

Hi everyone!

The Harbourside Kitchen crew will be down to Harbourside Park on May 1st for May Day celebrations. The plan is to cook a vegan lunch (serving time set for approximately 12:30 ish) and then asking anyone interested to bring something down for a super supper potluck (for around 7 pm).

We will be cooking and providing vegan options, but the potluck is open to all varieties of food. We welcome people to identify their vegan-friendly options though! Remember to bring a tupperware container to minimize the garbage.

You can drop your food donations down at the Occupy encampment in Harbourside Park, or email us to arrange something.

Help us to Occupy our Food Supply by subverting corporate food systems, and start more communal cooking and feasting. Hope to see you on May 1st :)

Cooking is a revolutionary act!

The Free Farm

This farm is situated right outside of San Francisco and everything is free. It goes to show that you can grow food just about anywhere. We need to re-imagine our entire food supply; this time with the caveat that it be sustainable, healthy, and community-oriented, in place of unsustainable, genetically-modified, and community eroding industrial farming.

We need to Occupy our food supply on a massive scale. Local initiatives like the Community Garden Alliance are a great starting point, I think.

Tour of the Rabbittown Community Garden!

The Harbourside Kitchen crew went on a tour of the RabbitTown Community Garden on Graves St. today, Saturday April 7th. (Here's the Facebook page for the Community Garden Alliance.) This community garden is open to anyone from the public interested in gardening, local food, and food security and sustainable living. The garden is not plot-based, rather everyone comes together to offer their time and energy gardening the various raised beds, berry bushes, and herb patches. Come harvest time, the food is divvied up equally.

Also, an upcoming event of interest mentioned during the tour of the garden is the FEASt Fest set for April14, 11 am - 3 pm. Here's the Facebook event page.

On the Edge...

This blog can be hub for food-related escapades, from St. John's clear across the country. We need to start somewhere, so why not at the edge of the harbour, in a tent with a bunch of radicals...
